Description

I wasn't super happy with my last one, so I decided to do another sketch of Justinian. He built the Hagia Sophia, taught the Persians to respect Roman swords once more, commissioned the simplification and reformation of imperial law into the Codex Lex Justinianus, masterminded Belisarius and Narses' reconquests of North Africa and Italy, and was once almost rioted out of his throne by antiquity's equivilant of unruly soccer hooligans . A cunning statesman and able administrator, he could be quite an egotistical jerk on an interpersonal level when the mood took him. He was a polarizing figure in his time, and Procopius famously hated his guts so much that he wrote a book about it. For the most part, he's been vindicated by history, as his legal and tax reforms stabilized the empire in the long run and saw to it that Constantinople would weather whatever storms history would throw at it for the next several centuries. Unfortunately, his reconquests would come back to bite the empire when they unraveled a generation later, and led to a general decline in the west. Still, no list of kings and emperors is complete without Justinian and any history of Rome would be a good deal shorter if he hadn't been there to shore up a collapsing state.
